A new study by the nonprofit American Institute of Architects (AIA) ranks the most popular building materials used in a wide range of buildings across the country, from large, multi-story office buildings to smaller houses and apartment buildings.
The study, “The Best Building Materials for Home and Office,” also considers the environmental impact of building materials, such as their impact on wildlife and soil.
The AIA’s research suggests that “materials with high environmental impact are more widely used,” said AIA Vice President for Design and Architecture Kevin Hagen.
“These materials are also environmentally friendly, and they reduce waste.”
For example, AIA found that materials that were used for the exterior of homes are generally not as environmentally destructive as those that were also used for building windows.
In addition, AIO found that home owners can choose from a variety of materials, including wood, concrete, concrete reinforced with steel, and cement, and glass.
The report is available online here.
Hagen said the study “shows that a strong preference for materials with high quality, low impact, and environmentally friendly uses, combined with strong support for the conservation of resources and the protection of biodiversity, can result in better buildings, more resilient landscapes and an improved quality of life for our residents.”
In addition to the environmental findings, the report also focuses on the overall design of homes.
The authors state that a large number of people have “a strong sense of what a home should look like,” and they want their homes to have a sense of style and character.
“The results show that a home designed in a manner that best matches the style and style of its surroundings, with minimal visual clutter, can make a huge impact on both the aesthetic of the home and the sustainability of its construction,” Hagen said.
“In addition … a home design that offers greater comfort and a sense the interior is a living space, as opposed to a home office, is more likely to be environmentally sustainable.”
The report also suggests that designers should pay attention to their design choices, including the materials used to construct and maintain a home.
The report states that the materials that are used in homes should be of a high quality and should not be in a way that creates negative environmental impacts.
“It is important to realize that our homes and buildings are often the last place we expect to be in the world, so we have to look for ways to minimize our environmental impact,” Hagan said.
